Assessments & Evaluations
All Players are required to be registered with VAFC for the 2023/24 Fall/Winter Soccer Season
Vancouver Athletic FC provides VAFC players with an year long assessment. There is a three step process that each team goes through with each player. This is why VAFC players are not required to participate in an ‘Open’ evaluation. The only ‘Open’ evaluation that VAFC players are expected to attend is the U13 Division 2 team evaluations.
1. Individual Coaches' Assessments
Throughout the year, team coaches are asked to look at a myriad of aspects of a player: skill, enthusiasm for the game, willingness to learn, sportsmanship, etc. Assessed within the team dynamic, a report is sent to the league's techincal director and head coach.
2. Technical Director's Assessment
Again, throughout the year, Steve Weston, the technical director, watches games in each league and division and makes assessments of players' progress as the season unfolds. This gives him a good overview of how players perform under normal game conditions.
3. Assessment Day
Joint Player evaluation review between Team Head Coach and VAFC Head Coach. This joint evaluation will provide a complete assessment from both a team and age group perspective.
‘OPEN’ Evaluations are for players that have never played (or have not played in several years) with Vancouver Athletic FC. VAFC Players that played in the 2023 Fall/Winter soccer season are not required to attend an evaluation because VAFC players are assessed by both your Team Head Coach and VAFC Technical Staff. The only exception is the U13 age group. All players wanting to play for the U13 Division 1 & 2 teams are required to attend an Open Evaluation. See further details below. Thanks!
U11 (2012) to U12 (2011) Player Evaluations : New Players to VAFC Only
- New Players to VAFC who would like to join a U11 or U12 Team (Division 2) are required to attend an ‘OPEN’ evaluation.
- VAFC Players do not need to attend an ‘Open’ evaluation. VAFC players get assessed by the Team Head Coach and Technical Staff.

Important: All new players to the club older than 2012 will be required to provide proof of age. Government issued ID is acceptable like a Canadian Birth Certificate, Passport, Permanent Residence Card.
U13 (2010) Division 2 Player Evaluations : Open to All Players
- Both VAFC and New Players are expected to attend the ‘OPEN’ evaluations for U13 Division 2.
- All players must be registered with VAFC for the Fall 2022 soccer season before given permission to attend the ‘OPEN’ evaluation.
- Players that have completed their registration with VAFC will be emailed the details of the ‘OPEN’ evaluation should they want them.

U14 (2009) to U18 (2005) Open Evaluations : New Players to VAFC Only
All VAFC players that played this past season will be assessed by their Team Head Coach and the Technical staff and are not required to attend an ‘OPEN’ Evaluation.
New Players to VAFC

- Open Evaluations are meant for our technical staff to evaluate the New Players and place them on teams that are best suited for their level of play.

Players that are registered with VAFC for the Fall 2023 Soccer Season will receive an email from the club with details on how to register for the Open Evaluation. These evaluations are for players wanting to play for the U11/U12 Division 2 teams. Please don’t register for the Open Evaluation if your desire is play at the Division 3 level. Thank you!

Players that are registered with VAFC for the Fall 2022 Soccer Season will receive an email from the club with details on how to register for the Open Evaluation. These evaluations are for players wanting to play for the U15 – U18 Division 2 teams. Please don’t register for the Open Evaluation if your desire is play at the Division 3 level. Thank you!
