Vancouver Athletic Football Club is looking for a Head Coach for the 2019-2020 season.

Our organization is searching for an individual to provide developmental youth soccer coaching to our growing membership of over 2,200 youth while assisting our Technical Director and Head Coach, Steve Weston.

Club Background

Vancouver Athletic Football Club (VAFC) is the divisional umbrella organization for three long-standing youth house soccer clubs: Douglas Park Soccer Club, Grandview Legion Football Club (est. 1955), and the Vancouver Girls Soccer Club.

Our diverse and inclusive membership has steadily grown over the last 5 years, with over 2,200 youth members ages 4 to 18 in Vancouver. And we are proud to support an environment that has one of the highest participation rates for girls soccer in Vancouver.

VAFC runs programs at the House League (U5-U10), 8-Aside (U11-U12) and Divisional (U13-18) levels with competitive and recreational options for fall/winter and spring leagues, a high performance Academy and leadership development for players. Players and coaches alike are supported in training and certification to achieve their highest potential in our club and to grow in an environment that remains engaging and, foremost, fun.

We partner with our neighbouring clubs and have a successful track records of graduating players into the high performance leagues. VAFC endorses the BC Soccer Association Long Term Player Development and received its BC Soccer Club Charter Standard One for the 2019-2020 season.

Head Coach Position

In order to provide further developmental coaching to our growing membership and assist our Technical Director and Head Coach, we are looking for a candidate commencing August 1st, 2019.

The applicant should have the following key experiences and competencies:

  • a passion for youth soccer development across both house and divisional levels, and will embody our club values
  • 5+ years coaching or developing youth soccer and CSA B National (comparable) certification
  • knowledge of best practices for program planning, and player evaluation
  • previous experience in mentoring coaches for youth soccer
  • effective communication and conflict management skills for both players, coaches, and our parent membership
  • understanding of Canadian Soccer Association’s Long Term Player development
  • involvement as a player at the University or College level in soccer or in another high performance sport a benefit
  • a proven ability to develop a fun and engaging rapport with youth
  • ability to manage time, level of effort, and budget reporting associated with other assistant coaches
  • ability to summarize, concisely,  weekly and monthly reports to the Board on operational issues in a timely and proactive way
  • valid driver’s licence
  • Criminal Record Check

The individual will report directly to the VAFC Technical Director and assist him in program delivery, as planned by the VAFC Board, and in monthly reporting to the VAFC Board. Initially the position will be focused on development programs for our House (<U11) and first four years of our Divisional football leagues (U12 to U14).

Position and Compensation

Hours of work will be primarily during weekday afternoons Monday through Thursday (after 5:oo PM field starts) and on weekends to help with house and divisional games.

The mandate is all year round: Leagues and programs run between August and March (winter season) and between April and June (spring season) interspersed with evaluations, team formations and development camps events.  Peak participation is ~30 hours per week during the September to February winter league.

A competitive and commensurate salary will be based on experience.
